by Trincomalee correspondent Samurdhi Minister R.A.D. Sirisena opened five Samurdhi banks in Trincomalee district recently. These banks were opened at Serunuwara in the Seruwila division, Palatoppur, Mutur West and Thahawagar in Mutur division Kinniya and Morawewa. He was accompanied by two members of Parliament in Trincomalee district M.A.M. Maharoof M.K. Thawfeek, UNP Organiser Sunil Santha Ranaweera, Government Agent Trincomalee N.P.K. Nelumdeniya, S.A.S. Senadheera, Deputy Director of Samurdhi B.S. Gamage, Assistant Commissioner Samurdhi in Trincomalee and the Divisional Secretaries. Mr. Sirisena said the present Government has ushered in peace and Samurdhi will eliminate poverty, with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. Many people are visiting Trincomalee as a result of which new avenues of income were opened for the local population. People living around Seruwila temple visited by thousands of devotees are earning an extra income by selling lotus flowers obtained from the Seruwila tank. All the banks except for one were opened in rented out buildings. Very soon these banks will begin to operate and people will be able to obtain loans at lower interest. He said Samurdhi beneficiaries can begin small businesses with loans obtained from Samurdhi banks. Minister Sirisena said the Samurdhi movement is to be rid of politics. He requested Samurdhi officers to rid themselves of politics and to help poor people to eradicate their poverty. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is following the footsteps of the late D.S. Senanayake in improving agriculture. Tamils and Muslims along with the Sinhalese fought for the independence of this country and these three communities should continue to live in amity. |
