Generators, a problem for shoppers

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Generators used by the traders have become the biggest problem and danger for the shoppers who visit towns for New Year shopping, several groups of shoppers told the "Daily News" yesterday.

It is a common scene that most of the traders keep their generators on the pavements to obtain power during the on-going day time power cuts. They keep their generators on the pavements in order to avoid smoke and noise.

At most times the shop owners use high powered diesel generators which produce heavy smoke and an irritating noise. This condition make shoppers uncomfortable and the traders keep their generators on pavements to avoid this obstacle.

"We have to breathe hot and smoky air discharged by the generators whenever we pass them and there is a big danger of getting electrocuted by accident if we fall on them while walking along crowded pavements", they said.

According to the shoppers the traders keep hundreds of high powered generators along the pavements blocking them inch by inch. The shoppers have to watch their children constantly because some times children touch the high powered generators which are kept uncovered along the pavements.
