By Channa Kasturisinghe The intervention of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake is likely to bring about a reduction of non-commercial domestic telephone charges. According to the Ministry sources, the Minister had intervened following several representations made to the Ministry's Customer Care Unit and to the consumer protection authorities with regard to the recent increase of monthly rentals by fixed phone operators. This had prompted the Minister to convene a special meeting of fixed phone operators in order to initiate a scheme to reduce the burden on the customers. The Minister had informed the companies that it was not the right time to effect any increase rentals and call charges as the public is facing hardships due to the cost of living. He had requested the companies to reconsider the decision to increase the rentals effected by them. It is learnt that fixed phone operators themselves have discussed the matter and a decision is to be made this week. A similar request will be made to Sri Lanka Telecom who recently increased tariff. |
