The main road adjoining the Sri Dalada Maligawa, which remained closed for several years, will be opened for traffic at the auspicious time of 9.37 a.m. today. The government has decided to re-open the road after an intelligence review concluded that there is no security threat to the Sri Dalada Maligawa at present. Central Region Development Minister Tissa Attanayake played a key role in getting the authorities to reopen the road. The road was barricaded and closed for all traffic after the bomb explosion near the Dalada Maligawa in January 1998. The road will now be open in a two-way configuration for all light vehicles. This is expected to reduce traffic congestion in Kandy. |
