Ceylon Theatres to change Lankan entertainment industry Ceylon Theatres plans to bring the latest award winning and box office smash hits so that Sri Lankan audiences will have access to these films when the films are at the height of their popularity. This is a refreshing change for most people who are starved of good movie entertainment. Ceylon Theatres counts almost 75 years as a major corporate entity in Sri Lanka. The company's renewed commitment to the entertainment industry of Sri Lanka augurs well not only for the people involved in the industry but also for those who have been starved of quality entertainment, a company spokesman said. "The newly re-launched Majestic Cinema speaks volumes of Ceylon Theatres' efforts to pioneer the cinema tradition in this country. Recognising a dearth in the number of people going to the cinemas and identifying the crux of the problem, Ceylon Theatres has embarked on a strategic campaign to give our people the ultimate movie experience," he said. The company over the years been associated with some of the biggest names in the worldwide movie industry including Rank Organisation, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Columbia, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Warner Brothers, Allied Artists, United Artists and Paramount Pictures. One of the landmark events in Ceylon Theatres' colourful history is the opening of the Regal Theatre in 1930. It was an event patronised by the rich and famous of Colombo society and the cinema hall itself was a masterpiece. Many other cinemas such as the Majestic and Empire were added to the cinema chain as time went by. Today Ceylon Theatres is a successful organisation, employing over 18,000 people across its group of companies. Within the group, Ceylon Theatres operates eight cinemas throughout the country bringing films of different languages, styles and countries to the populace. Ceylon Theatres' involvement with the cinema is not just one of screening films. From the first film that was produced by Ceylon Theatres "Asokamala" onwards, Ceylon Theatres has played their part in producing films and assisting those employed in the film industry. The local cinema owes much to the efforts of Ceylon Theatres for the support and encouragement it has given, the spokesman said. |
