New intellectual property laws soon

The National Intellectual Property Office (NIPO) will finalise a document pertaining to the introduction of new intellectual property laws on May 15.

The new laws will be formulated based on the proposed amendment to the existing intellectual property law and will be implemented as soon as possible, the Director of Intellectual Property D.M. Karunaratne told the Daily News.

The introduction of automated support for the National Intellectual Property administration and amendment to the existing laws would be a boost to the country's business sector, Director of Intellectual Property Organisation, Dr. D.M. Karunaratne told the Daily News.

"The new intellectual property law will fulfil the obligations of the recently concluded World Trade Organisation ministerial conference and will cover most areas hitherto not covered by the existing laws in Sri Lanka," Mr. Karunaratne said.

He said measures would also be taken to introduce a cost effective dispute resolution mechanism in a bid to expedite the process of ensuring intellectual property rights of professionals including authors, musicians and computer software developers.
