Timely intervention saves Rs. 54m on track The timely intervention of the United National Front Government has helped to save Rs. 54 million on relaying of a new artificial running track at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo. Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Johnston Fernando took a bold step to cancel the recommendations of the previous elevation committee and consider all 11 bids put forward by various companies to relay the Sugathadasa Stadium track. After months of delays, Minister Fernando finally took the right and the most favorable decision to protect national interest. Thereby, the Government has been able to save Rs. 54 million national funds as the previous Government's elevation committee had recommended a tender worth Rs. 160 million for the same job. Sugathadasa Stadium will now have a world famous Rekotan track for the forthcoming Asian Track & Field meet. The tender to relay a new Rekotan track has been won by N & D Trading (Private) Ltd of No. 176/44 J, Thimbirigasyaya Road, Colombo 5. Their bid of Rs. 108 million has been finally approved by the Cabinet Tender Board and also approved by Minister Fernando after following proper tender procedures. Sports Ministry sources said they immediately got in touch with the winning bidder and the relaying of the Sugathadasa Stadium track would be completed on schedule to host the 44-nation Asian Track & Field Championship at the venue in August this year.
