'Herculean effort needed to revive hockey'

"The game of hockey is not what it used to be and it needs a herculean effort to revive it and get it back on track" said the President of the Mercantile Hockey Association (MHA), Dennis de Rosayro who was elected President for a record 25th time.

Speaking at the 46th AGM held at the Colombo Hilton last week, Dennis emphasised the need to be disciplined and said that a lack of discipline leads to poor play on the field of sport and a breakdown in the level and standard of the game.

Elected as office bearers at this 46th AGM along with Dennis were Vice President V. Ganesh (Amico Industries), Malcolm Dias (Glaxo SmithKLine), Brian Baptist (Bartleets Group), J.C.R. Cooray (Browns), J.D. Bandaranayake (Ceylon Tobacco), Anura Ekanayake (Unilevers), Mahinda Wijeratne(M.W. Associates), Kenneth Beekmeyer (Adam Expo), T.M. Lameez (Ceylon Tobacco), and M.T. Swangsa (Bartleets).

Secretary Kenneth Beekmeyer, who has stamped his class as a model Secretary and Mahinda Wijeyeratne, Treasurer, who has been a tower of strength since 1984 were elected to these key posts.

M. Jaldin, Assistant Secretary, who was the former Secretary, and J. Majid who is the Asst. Treasurer were also re-elected.

Hemaka Amarasuriya the former Vice Patron from 1983 to 1988, has now been the Patron of the Association since 1989 and will be completing 20 years this year.

Senior Vice Patron, Malcolm Dias, and other vice patrons Brian Baptist (since 1985), Chrisantha Cooray (from 1989), J.D. Bandaranayake (since 1989) were also commended by the President.

Anura Ekanayake of Unilevers was invited as the fifth Vice Patron since 2000.

On the Executive Committee for 2002/2003 are P.W.K. Welaratne (Airport and Aviation), H.L. Mitrapala (Ceylon Tobacco), D. Jayasena (Browns Group), S.Jayasena (Commercial Bank), M. Jansz (John Keells Group), M.I.Jumar (Janashakthi Group), B.D. Bandaranayake (Sri Lankan Airlines), S. Kumar (Singers), R. Mahagalaella (Singapore Informatics), N. Rupasinghe.

The selection Committee comprises T.M. Lameez (Ceylon Tobacco) -Chairman, M.T. Swangsa (Bartleets), B.L.V.S. Perera (John Keells Group), M.I. Kumar(Janashakthi Group), M.I. Jumar (Janashakthi Group). Hony auditor: Sunil Karunanayake (Unilevers Ceylon Ltd - Tea division).
