The People's Alliance is seeking an appointment with top diplomats to discuss what it calls a "witch-hunt" against Opposition MPs. In a letter to several Ambassadors and High Commissioners, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse said he was "gravely concerned about the recent developments with regard to co-habitation arrangements between the President and the Government, especially in regard to the systematic destabilization of the President's security, the calculated " witch hunt" initiated against the opposition members of Parliament and related abuses of the judicial process by the Government." He added: "At a time when constructive cohabitation between the government and the Opposition is of paramount importance, especially in relation to the peace process, the emerging trend of harassment and intimidation of the President and the Opposition are indeed very disturbing. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate an early appointment with you to discuss this with a delegation comprising MP Nimal Siripala de Silva, Sarath Amunugama, Dilan Perera and Mangala Samaraweera and Presidential Spokesman Harim Peiris. |
