Program to entice youth for leadership

by Ranga Jayasuriya

A youth leadership project was launched on Wednesday in a bid to promote youth participation in local politics and to build their leadership capacity and organisational development. The program titled 'The Democratic Youth Leadership Project' will be organised by the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) in collaboration with the National Council of Swedish Youth Organisations (LSU), SLFI Director Dr. Wijaya Jayatilaka said at the launching.

"Youth participation is insignificant in many spheres in Sri Lankan society and continuous marginalisation of young people throughout recent history has resulted in marginalisation being institutionalised," Jayatilaka said.

He said the project which will be implemented from 2002 to 2005 will be focused on the economic empowerment of young people, capacity building of individuals and groups and promotion of youth in politics.

The project will be based on principle of inclusivity which would help all youth irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual preferences to receive its benefits.

The project hopes to provide short term training and study visits for youth leaders, civil servants, politicians and workers, raise awareness on youth marginalisation through peer education and seminars, produce training materials in the relevant field and to undertake research on various important issues related to young people.
