Government purchases maize The Government launched a program to purchase maize produced islandwide. Under this program, facilities will be provided to farmers of Mahaweli and other areas, to sell maize at Rs. 12.50 per kilo, at their farm itself. Sandasiri Wickramarachchi, Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management, stated that this was agreed at a discussion Irrigation and Water Management Minister Gamin Jayawickrama Perera and Agriculture, Samurdhi, and Livestock Development Minister S. B. Dissanayake, had with the animal food production business community, at the Parliamentary complex recently. The Secretary stated that thousands of farmers who have not been able to market their maize will be immensely benefitted by this program and it will be an encouragement for them to cultivate maize. Saving of foreign exchange utilized for the importation of animal food as well as creating employment opportunities for the unemployed youth will be among the other benefits, the Secretary added. |
