Record paddy harvests for maha season

by Galewela group correspondent

Selected farmers in Beligamuwa, Welamitiyawa, Yatigalpotta, Silwathgama, Malawayaya, Pahalawewa and Wettiyaya villages within Galewela DS Division have obtained record harvests from paddy cultivation in the current Maha season. They have followed the "Nawa Kekulan Method" and spread straw over the seed paddy sown in the paddy field.

Mr. Madduma Bandara of Yatigalputta and A. G. Adwin Fernando of Beligamuwa have got over 170 bushels per acre. Most of the other farmers also have got a record harvest.

The Dambulla Community Resources Development Centre has organized trained and monitored this new cultivation method.

Mr. Madduma Bandara told the "Daily News" that, as was instructed by the organizers he did not apply artificial fertilizer or agro-chemicals in his paddy field. He applied only compost manure and followed indigenous pest control methods.

He also said that the cultivation cost was less and a distance of about 12 inches was kept between the paddy-plants and as a result a large number of plants emerged in every bush promising a higher yield.
