OPA wants balanced Commissions The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) letter to the chairman and members of the Constitutional Council has welcomed their appointment. It also called upon them to ensure a prosper balance in the appointment of the Independent Commissions. The letter released to the media also said: "The OPA feels, that by the establishment of this Council that the country will be afforded the opportunity for good governance. We have already expressed our concern that we are not in agreement with the composition of the Constitutional Council as it is not balanced and heavily weighted towards one profession in a population of 19 million. "The OPA strived hard in their deliberations with UNP, SLFP, JVP, and other Tamil parties to ensure that important segments of the civil society are represented in this most important body. However, much to their dismay this is not to be, unless the Members of the Constitutional Council themselves decide to bring about a balance either immediately or in the future. Parliamentarians seem to be favouring only eminent people from one profession. Be that as it may, we strongly urge the members of the Constitutional Council to ensure that there is a proper balance in the appointment of the Independent Commissions and careful thought be given to other eminent members in the different professions within the country. The OPA as the apex body of all professions in this country, has a duty to ensure that the democratic process works without any subversions. We are confident that the ten eminent members of the Constitutional Council will ensure fair play and justice in order to strengthen the democratic process in this country. |
