PM meets party leaders

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will meet Political Party leaders this Monday to discuss the setting up of a Parliamentary Committee to assess the progress of the Ceasefire Agreement between the LTTE and the Government.

The committee will be a result of a proposal by LSSP Leader Batty Weerakoon in a letter to the PM asking to give the MPs a particular role in the ongoing peace process, Prof. G.L. Peiris told the Cabinet Press briefing yesterday.

The Committee, which will comprise 12 members, will also entertain public complaints with regard to violation of the Ceasefire Agreement, etc. "These members will not necessarily have to be from among the Members of Parliament," he emphasised.

There will be regional sub committees set up with funding from foreign missions and donor agencies to co-ordinate with the Parliamentary Committee of the regional level. They will submit a monthly report of their assessment to the parliament committee, prof.l Peiris added.
