Prime suspect, businessman remanded

The prime suspect in the Assistant Superintendent of Customs Sujith Prasanna Perera murder case, Assistant Superintendent of Customs Anura Weerawansa who was arrested in the early hours on Saturday while hiding in a palatial house at Pokunuwita in the Horana police area by a special team of the CID was on Saturday evening produced before the Gampaha Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sujatha Alwis and remanded till March 15.

The businessman B.G. Dayasiri who is alleged to have harboured the Customs Officer Anura Weerawansa was also produced before the Gampaha Magistrate and remanded till March 15.

Western Province (North) DIG Pathamasiri Liyanage who is directing investigations conducted by Gampaha Senior SP Lucky Peiris said the two suspects will be produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Fernando on March 15.

The CID team comprised CID DIG C.L. Ratnayake, CID Director Senior SP Lionel Gunatilleke and a team of officers.

Investigations into the killing of Customs Officer Prasanna Perera was earlier commenced by Western Province (North) DIG Daya Jayasundera, former Gampaha Senior SP (now Southern Range DIG) D.W. Prathapasinghe and Detective SP Nimal Kulatunga.

Customs officer Sujith Prasanna Perera was gunned down by two unidentified gunmen at Kiribathgoda-Peliyagoda junction on March 24, last year while he was returning from his mother-in-law's place.

The Police will charge the three suspects who were taken into custody in connection with the murder of Customs Officer Prasanna Perera. They are Kiribathgoda Vajira Indrajith, Thalgamahewage Nalinda Saman Udaya Kumar, and Arachchilage Don Priyantha alias Konde Chithra. They were remanded till March 15.

The other suspects will be charged with aiding and abetting Anura Weerawansa to escape from the country, conspiracy, concealing evidence and harbouring the principal suspect Anura Weerawansa.

On the last date the Colombo Additional Magistrate directed four persons to appear before court on the next date, March 15. They are businessman A.C. Mohammed Mansor, K.J. Anthony, R.M.P. Ratnayake and Attorney-at-Law Bandula Wijesinghe.

Inspector Somasiri Liyanage, OIC, CDB Gampaha Police Special Branch with Inspectors D. M. Jayasinghe, Sagara Liyanage and Cammilus of the Gampaha police are assisting in the investigations.
