by Deraniyagala roving correspondent To overcome the present Power crisis and conserve energy, the government should enforce on plantation companies to drive their Estate machineries either by powerful generators or turbines in their possession. This appeal has been made to the Government by Plantations Trade Unions. They point out that prior to Estates being dependent on CEB power they operated their own machineries with power generated from turbines for which water was supplied from Bunds in every estate. In some estates fuel driven engines were commissioned to run the machineries. All these sources of energy were discontinued by estates after they obtained power supplies from the CEB. The intake of electricity is high on estates, as it is used not only to operate machineries but also for lighting superintendent's assistants and staff bungalows which consume heavy electricity the unions say. In order, to avert further decline in electricity supplies, the sources urge the Minister of Power and Energy to enforce regulation compelling estate companies to deviate from being dependent on CEB power supplies but to seek ways and means of obtaining power from resources at their disposal. |
