India, Pakistan trade heavy fire in Kashmir: Pakistan police

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, Feb 26 (AFP) - Indian and Pakistani troops traded heavy fire Tuesday along their disputed border in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, police said.

The firing occurred in Samahni sector in the southernmost district of Bhimbher in the Pakistani part of Kashmir, which faces Naushara sector in the Indian zone of the troubled territory.

"They (Indian troops) started shelling at 3:30 pm (1030 GMT), using mortars and artillery, targetting the villages of Danna, Baroh, Khumbah and Haripur," superintendent of police Tariq Ajmi told AFP by telephone.

"The shelling is heavy and is continuing intermittently. But so far we have not received any report of any physical or material loss."

A resident in Samahni reached by AFP on telephone said the Pakistani army was also returning fire "to silence the enemy guns".

Cross-border shelling and skirmishes along the Line of Control that divides Kashmir into arch rivals India and Pakistan are a nearly daily occurrence, causing casualties on both sides.

On Monday, one civilian was killed and at least four others were injured in Pakistani Kashmir in Indian shelling in the southern Poonch district, police said.
