Pakistani police detain 13 after shooting of Shiite worshippers

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Feb 27 (AFP) - Thirteen members of a banned Sunni Muslim extremist group were detained for questioning overnight after gunmen shot dead 10 worshippers at a Shiite mosque, police said Wednesday.

Ten members of Sipah-e-Sahaba were rounded up in the northern city of Rawalpindi, where the massacre took place Tuesday evening, said police officer Khalid Ahmed.

Another three militants of the group were picked up in the eastern city of Lahore, officer Mohammad Zahid said by telephone.

Two gunmen burst into the Shah-Najaf mosque Tuesday evening, locking the door and spraying gunfire at the worshippers.

Ten people were killed and another 15 injured, police said, in the worst communal attack since President Pervez Musharraf announced a crackdown January 12 on Islamic extremist and sectarian groups.
