The Department expects to extend the project to the Northern and Eastern Provinces. "During the first 30 days since the Government announced its 100-day program we have distributed over 4,300 identity cards to schoolchildren and direct applicants through school Heads and the Divisional secretariats", Commissioner Wijaya Ranasinghe told the Daily News. He said that attention will also be focused on 149 estates, located in the main plantation areas where nearly 38,000 people do not possess NICs. He said "about 26,000 estate sector workers and other residents have also requested new NICs in place of their lost and mutilated ones". "We will conduct mobile services in estate areas. Steps have been taken to commence 18 mobile services at selected Government and semi-Government Departments, corporations, statutory boards countrywide and Local Government institutions within the next three weeks." Commissioner Ranasinghe said the Department's attention has also focused on 35,000 displaced persons living in Northern and Eastern provinces. "To make this 100-day program a success a special information counter is now open at the Department Head Office at No. 45, Keppetipola Mawatha, Colombo- 5 for the benefit of the public", he said. |
