by Tharika Goonathilake Cattle ear-marked for slaughter will be given a new lease of life every full moon Poya day under a humanitarian initiative launched by the Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake. Under the initiative 25 cattle will be released every Poya Day to low income group families to provide them with an additional source of income while supporting efforts to spare these animals from the Butcher's Knife. The cattle will be released to 25 families in the Galgamuwa area. The first group of cattle under the initiative will be released by Minister Senanayake at the Sambodhi Vihara, at Wijerama. The Chief incumbent Ven. Daranagala Kusaladhamma Thera will preside over the ceremony. According to the Environment Ministry, cattle slaughter in Sri Lanka is on the increase but it is done in the most gruesome manner. "This initiative will help to save these animals while providing an income to needy families," he said. |
