The Government of Sri Lanka and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) signed a new program of co-operation covering the period 2002-2006 on February 25 at the Ministry of Finance. Under the new program, UNICEF will provide financial and technical assistance for programs fulfilling the rights of children and women to the tune of Rupees 2.4 billion (US$ 27 million). The main activities and interventions of the program are Early Childhood, Learning Years, Adolescents as well as Protection of children and women. The Early Childhood program will cover the holistic development of a child, by promoting the physical, cognitive and psychosocial development, in the critical first years of a child's life. The Learning Years program seeks to enrol every child in school and provide a child friendly learning environment at home and in school. The Adolescence program will enhance the knowledge and life skills of adolescents. The elimination of child abuse and discrimination against women will be supported by the Protection program. These programs will be intensively implemented in the north and east, and border villages where children and women are acutely affected by the conflict. The Government as well as Non-Governmental Organisations and the Civil Society will implement the program. |
