The President reiterated her continued full commitment to a negotiated settlement of the ethnic conflict and said that "she does not have any intention to hinder the negotiation process." The statement: "The attention of the President has been drawn to several news items in the local and foreign media referring to a statement purported to have been made by her regarding the Memorandum of Understanding between the Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe and the LTTE Leader, Mr. V. Piribhakaran. "The President wishes to categorically deny the said statement attributed to the affect that "She can cancel the MOU with one letter to the Army Commander." What the President said was she is concerned about certain clauses in the said MoU and that she was awaiting the report of the committee appointed by her to study the MoU in detail. The President will issue a statement thereafter. The President reiterates that she continuously remain fully committed to a negotiated settlement to the ethnic conflict hence she does not have any intention to hinder the negotiation process which she herself began." |
