Maoist rebels kill two police officers in Nepal KATHMANDU, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Two police officers were killed and seven wounded when their vehicle hit a landmine planted by Maoist rebels in western Nepal, police said on Friday. "Two officers were killed on Thursday after their jeep ran over a landmine while on a patrol duty in Tanahun," a police official told Reuters. The Maoist rebels have been fighting to set up a communist republic in the Himalayan kingdom since early 1996. The rebels broke a truce and four months of peace process in November. More than 500 people, including over 100 security personnel and guerrillas, have been killed since then. Nepal has deployed its soldiers to crush the rebellion which has claimed more than 2,300 lives since the fighting erupted in early 1996. |
