'Huge EC support, if peaceful solution found'

The European Union has expressed its willingness to support large- scale rehabilitation work in the North-East in the event of a peaceful solution to the ethnic conflict, the EU's Environment Commissioner, Margot Wallstrom said on Thursday delivering the Dr. A. C. S. Hameed commemoration lecture at the BMICH.

Congratulating the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for working towards peace and lauding the latter's steadfastness in pursuing the peace effort M/S Wallstrom expressed the hope that the peace process would move a long way via a permanent ceasefire.

Noting that the Prime Minister's decision to shed all ministerial posts would provide him with the capacity to personally follow the peace process the EU's Environment Commissioner also commended the courage shown by the Minister of Rehabilitation, Re-settlement and Refugees for speedily focussing on the humanitarian aspect of the conflict in setting up medical centres etc. in the conflict regions.

She observed that this was an essential aspect of confidence building essential in finding a permanent solution to the conflict.
