Trade mission to India

A 20 member trade delegation to India organised by the Sri Lanka Chamber of Small Industry is scheduled for early March 2002. It will be a 12-day program visiting Mumbai, Ahamedabad and New Delhi. This mission is organised with the co-operation of V. Ashok, Counsellor - Economic and Commercial of the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The purpose of this mission is to find counterparts for joint venture, export of local products to India, and find avenues for the import of raw materials and machinery. The chamber itself will study the various program made available for the development of small industries on the three different states. The mission will be lead by Aloy R. Jayawardene, President.

The Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry along with the Indian Merchants Chamber in Mumbai have arranged a three day program. Discussions between buyers and sellers, for the purchase of raw materials and machinery, export of local products and joint venture programs are listed factory visits and discussions with funding institutions of small and medium industry are on the cards.

The Industries Commissioner of the Government of Gujarat has arranged for the Sri Lanka mission meeting with members of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry through Industrial Extension Bureau, the nodal agency for Promoting Investment and International Trade in Gujarat. They have arranged meeting with Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Minister of Industries and also with senior officials of the State Industries Administration.

In Delhi, the Confederation of Indian Industry will take care of the delegation. They will arrange suitable programs such as meetings with their members and plant visits. They have organised a sight seeing visit to Agra, Taj Mahal one of the seven wonders of the world.

With the important issue in our nation today, that of the national Ethnic conflict in the forefront and with both major political parties committed to a negotiated end to the conflict, the opportunity, thrust upon them to work together to implement a negotiated solution, has given the Chamber of Small Industry the courage to promote this mission to our neighbour. With a solution in view, the Indian Industrialists would give a more favourable look towards investment in Sri Lanka.

The mission has already indicated to the respective Chambers the areas of their interests for joint ventures, some of which are automotive spares, furniture, glass products, steel fabrication, electrical pole hardware, motor cycle seats, assembly of computers and spares and aluminium fabrication. The mission will also look into marketing opportunities for products in India such as steel furniture, electrical panal data communication enclosures, low voltage electrical switch boards, wooden furniture. They will also look for Indian manufacturers of machinery and raw materials.

The feedback has been encouraging from the respective Chambers and the Chamber is confident that the mission would return with completed programmes for implementation.
