Saunders
fancied to win Premier League
by LESLIE FERNANDO The Premier League Soccer Championships 2001-2002 has reached an interesting stage with the defending champions Saunders SC taking the top spot in the points table. The unbeaten Saunders SC have collected 24 points from 10 matches and three more games in hand before the champions are decided. Air Force SC also has the same number of points 24 but have played two more games (12) than the table leaders Saunders SC. The favourites to retain the title Saunders SC, have played ten games winning 7 and drawing the other three matches. They have scored 18 goals and conceded 7. Meanwhile Air Force SC is placed in second position, completing 12 matches winning 7, drawing 3 and losing the other 2. Air Force SC has only one more game to be played. Last year's runners-up Negombo Youth SC is lying in third place with 20 points and remain unbeaten like Saunders SC. The formidable Negombo Youth SC, staking a strong claim for this year's championship honours, has played 10 matches winning 5 and drawing the other 5 games. If Negombo Youth SC is successful in winning their last three games and Saunders SC draw and lose their three remaining games, Negombo side has a great chance to be on top of the points table and emerge champions. Blue Star SC, Kalutara who started in great fashion, winning their first six games in-a-row has now dropped to fourth place with 20 points from 11 matches while Jupiters SC, Negombo is in fifth position with 17 playing lesser number of matches of 9. This side from Negombo is also unbeaten so far, winning 4 matches and drawing the other 5. They have 4 more games in hand. Saunders SC vs Negombo Youth SC Top soccer fare is in the offing when the holders Saunders SC and last year's runners-up Negombo Youth SC clash in a key Premier League match to be played at Maris Stella grounds, Negombo on Sunday kick-off at 4.15 p.m. It is the hope of players and spectators, that tighter refereeing will be the order of the day as there have been several incidents owing to poor 'blowing' from the referees in number of key games played during past weeks. |
