Polished 'ton' from Aravinda

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Former Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva proved that he has still not lost his old touch with the willow as he made a polished century for NCC on the opening day of his team's BCCSL Inter-Club Premier League final round match against Tamil Union, begun at CCC grounds, Maitland Crescent yesterday.

De Silva, who was recalled to the Sri Lanka practice pool for the upcoming tours to Sharjah and England, proved the selectors' decision right when he made a superb 65 for NCC in last Saturday's BCCSL Premier division one day tournament final.

De Silva grabbed the first opportunity he got, after his chances of finding a place in the Sri Lanka team for the summer tour of England looked bright, in the very first innings he faced in the final round of the Premier League.

He made exactly 100 before retiring hurt as NCC made a modest 232 for 6 at close against Tamil Union.

The other most significant performance came from former Sri Lanka Test spinner Rangana Herath, who had a penetrative spell of 8 for 47 as his team Moors SC restricted Galle CC to 163 all out at NCC grounds.

Former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsman Romesh kaluwitharana made a welcome return after recovering from an injury, which kept him out of the Sri Lanka pool. He made a half century for Colts on day one of their match against CCC, which lost the first innings points.
