Train disaster committee continues investigations

by Oswald Godakumbura

It is difficult to investigate the engine of the ill fated intercity train which derailed at Rambukkana recently. Because the above engine was put into service again," said Retired Hight Court Judge O.W.O.B. Weerasena, President of the Special Committee investigating the accident.

He said so after investigating the place where the train derailed together with the ill fated compartments.

He also said that the railway was not properly maintained.

Transport Minister Thilak Marapone appointed a three member committee to investigate into this accident which caused the death of fifteen commuters.

Professor W.M. Karunadasa and Dr. T.A. Piyasiri are the other members of the committee.

The Committee has taken into their custody the brake parts removed from the train which was in the custody of Rambukkana Station Master, for further investigations. The committee also investigated the guard compartment stationed at the Rambukkana railway station.

It was revealed that railway sleepers were not duly maintained up to this date.
