Kotte to be made tourist attraction

The historic city of Kotte will be developed as a tourist attraction soon. The Ministry of Western Region Development took this decision at a conference held at the Urban Development Authority on Thursday with the participation of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake to prepare plans to expedite urban development activities in Kotte.

UDA Chairman, Prasanna Gunawardena and several other UDA officials also attended the conference.

A press release issued by the Western Region Development Ministry in this connection said it was also decided at this conference to complete as many development activities as possible under the Kotte Raja Maha Viharaya sacred area project within the ambit of the government's 100 days program.

The re-development of this sacred area will be undertaken in a manner that would not hinder its historic and archaeological value, said UDA Chairman Prasanna Gunawardena.

Among the other decisions taken at this conference were to conserve the immediate environs of the Diyawanna Oya and the bird sanctuary including the Kotte ramparts, develop the playground opposite the Kotte Parliamentary Complex, redevelop the canal and road complex connected to the Diyawanna Oya and find quick solutions to the housing problems in the area.
