Help for Lankans in distress

Where charity is concerned Beatrice Wilson Mische's single-handed contribution to Sri Lankans in distress is unique judged by any standards.

By January 2002 in 25 years she had donated 15 wheel chairs each worth around Rs. 89,000, 300,000 spectacles and a mass of medical equipment to orphanages and charitable institutions which asked for help from all over the country.

How does she do it, and where does the money come from? She's modest in her reply.

She arrived in Sri Lanka from Germany, a starry eyed 23 year old as a Professional Management Trainer. She was also a natural born helper of the helpless. She looked around, fell in love with the country and its people, soon made it her second home and plunged into the noble hobby of giving.

"I rented a home I inherited in Germany and that money helps a lot. Friends there send spectacles they no longer need. And if there are wheel chairs they can do without I buy them", she told the 'Daily News'. Last year alone she donated 13,000 spectacles through eye camps.
