Former Deputy Minister threatens fast unto death

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Former Deputy Minister D. M. Dassanayake yesterday said that he would fast unto death demanding an early bail-out.

"I will fast unto death from today with other 20 political detainees in order to protest against refusal to grant us bail", he told the Daily News in Parliament yesterday.

He said that most of these detainees have been remanded on false complaints. Police officers are fishing in trouble waters. They arrest political opponents of the UNP to satisfy them in order to gain promotions, he said.

"We will not take any food until our demands are met", he said.

There are six detainees held in an eight feet long cell room. We have to defecate and urinate to a small tin, Mr.Dassanayake said.Being a people's representative I am deprived of attending to my public duties.

I have been elected by over 50,000 voters. But I cannot meet them today and solve their problems".

My wife who is a provincial Councillor is not allowed to attend sittings while my little daughter's schooling is disrupted. What kind of democracy is this? I have not killed any one or hurt anyone. But I am harassed, he said.

"I now realised that democracy will not be ensured by this Government just like the PA Government", he said.
