Interest free loans to SMI entrepreneurs

Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Minister of Finacce Bandula Gunawardena said the government hoped to supploy small industrialiss with the necessary machinery and equipment under an interest free loan scheme through the implementation of an enterprise capital development program.

He said this will enale small industrialists to use their own machinery and equipment for production without leasing machinery at exhibitant rates.

The Minister said this when a group of entrepreneurs from the Western Province met him at his Ministry to seek solutions to certain problems confronting them. The Minister saidthe Government is giving priority to the development of the rural economy which had suffered a severe setback during the last 7 years. The small scale industrialists will also be mde partners int he national economic development effort by improving their living conditions.

Under this program it has already been planned to start a priting industrial town on a plot of land in Panaluwa owned by he state Printing Corporation.

Minister Gunawardena said his Ministry has formulated plans to organise exhibitions and sales on a district basis with the Corporation of Provincial Councils to market the products of rural industrialists. The first such exhibition and sale will be held at the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo soon. Exhibitions and sales have also been planned in the Gampaha and Kalutara districts within the next few months.

Secretary Ministry of Rural Exonomy P. Liyanarachchi, Additional Secretary M. G. S. Dharmasena and Senior Assistant Secretary C. P. Siriwardena also participated.
