Kelaniya
Duruthu Perahera tomorrow
The last day of the 75th annual Duruthu Maha Perahera will be held tomorrow at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara commencing from 9.30 p.m. This religious cultural pageant has evolved over the years to permanent position as the country's most elaborate and grandest low country pageant in its category, which will be held with the participation of Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, president of the Dayaka Sabha this year. The Dayake Sabha has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the success of this historic religious pageant much revered by all Sri Lankans. Attention has been paid to all details with the objective of perpetuating the traditional rites, rituals and customs long associated with this magnificent pageant including the participation of traditional dancers, caparisoned elephants and other colourful items. The perahera will commence with the handing over of the relics casket to Chief Basnayake Nilame, Shalitha Wijesundera by the Viharadhipathi, Ven. Dr. Kollupitiya Mahinda Sangharakkita Nayake Thera before it is taken in the perahera. The historic Kelaniya Duruthu Maha Perahera had its origins in the year 1927, due largely to the efforts of that great philanthropist Don Walter Wijewardene, son of Helana Wijewardene Lamathani and father of late Mr Upali Wijewardene, founder of Upali Group. |
