Tea smallholder factories to be opened on Jan 30

The Ministry of Small Holder Development has made arrangements to commission the two new Tea Small Holder factories at Gilimale and Elpitiya on January 30 and taken several measures for the welfare of the Tea Small Holder sector under its development program to coincide with the Government's 100 day program, said a press release issued by the Ministry yesterday.

The release said three rounds of talks have been held by the Ministry with the officials and Regional Managers of the Tea Small Holdings Authority to apprise them of the development program envisaged by the Ministry and motivate them in achieving the expected targets and goals.

Four mobile services have already been held at Ingiriya, Matugama, Pelawatte and Kuruwita so far with the participation of the Minister, Ministry staff and representatives of the TSHDA to solve tea small holder problems.

Altogether 7,500 applications for cultivation subsidies were received from tea small holders during these mobile service while 750 permits have been issued for new cultivations.

The release said 700 tea small holders have been given a training in the sector during these mobile services which also helped to activate 69 dormant small holder unions. Another 400 small holders have been enrolled to the 'Tea Shakti' program during this period.

Meanwhile the Tea Shakti Factory Network has been able to purchase 1 million kilograms of green leaf from cultivators while management factories have purchased 300,000 kilograms.

A sub station of the TSHDA has also been opened at Kuruwita to streamline the activities of the TSHDA.
