Sri Lankan women rout Pakistan

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Sri Lanka continued their dominance against Pakistan when they thrashed the visitors by 129 runs in their third women's one day limited over match played at Moors grounds, Braybrooke Place yesterday.

Taking the first lease of the wicket, Sri Lanka got off to an excellent start with Indika Kankanamge (58 with six boundaries) and Wasanthi ratnayake (88 with one six and six fours) putting on 143 runs for the first wicket.

The century opening stand enabled the hosts to make a healthy 217 for 3 in their allotted 50 overs.

The Lankan target looked too much for Pakistan as the visitors were bowled out for 88 in 46 overs against some penetrative bowling by Lankans. Rose Fernando (4 for 15) and Ramani Perera (3 for 3) came out with two accurate spells to send Pakistan women crashing to defeat.

Sri Lanka now takes an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the six-match series after their two good wins in the first two games. The two teams will now travel to Kandy to meet once again in the fourth one day limited over match to be played at the Asgiriya Stadium on Sunday (27). A win for Sri Lanka in the hill capital will enable the hosts to wrap-up the series, irrespective of the outcome of next week's last two games of the series, which is a part of their preparations for the upcoming women's World Cup.

SRI LANKA: 217 for 3 in 50 overs (Indika Kankanamge 58, Wasanthi Ratnayake 88, Hiruka Fernando 23, Hiroshi Abeysinghe 16).

PAKISTAN: 88 all out in 46 overs (Kiran Baluch 22, Rose Fernando 4 for 15, Ramani Perera 3 for 3). (D.W.)
