Police team to probe incidents

by Puttalam group correspondent

A special team of Police officers under the command of ASP I. M. Karunarathne has now been deployed in Puttalam to conduct investigations into all incidents of violence and terror that swept through the district as from 1994 with special reference to the Anamaduwa electorate. This ASP on duty in Vavuniya has taken up this new appointment and has set up his office alongside the Chief Minister's office in Puttalam.

With the victory of the UNP at the last general elections, Puttalam District MP Palitha Range Bandara has stepped in to quell this situation. In that direction, he has brought this situation to the notice of the Government suggesting immediate measures to restore law and order. This special Police team of investigations was set up in response to his initiative.

In order to facilitate rapid action, Mr. Range Bandara has filed a comprehensive report tabling the violences and other incidents of political victimization before this special Police unit. According to this report there had been 219 instances of violence in the Anamaduwa electorate alone as from 1994 while the Police has ignored most of them.
