Army clash with police

Police trying to disperse the crowd after the incident.

Six soldiers and three policemen were wounded in a mini battle between the army and the police yesterday at Dalada Veediya, Kandy. Firearms were used in fighting.

Fighting broke out at 2.30 pm yesterday following a verbal confrontation between a police officer and an army soldier over a parked army vehicle at Dalada Veediya. Thousands were stranded and shops were closed soon after fighting began.

"The policeman has attacked the army officer and then a bus full of army soldiers came and attacked the policemen in the city with clubs. The police fired into air and then at the army for self defence. Then the army retaliated with firing," police sources said. Kandy HQI Edmand Mahendra was among the wounded, it said.

Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne intervened when a group of army men tried to enter the Maligawa Police Post, Maligawa sources said.

No high ranking police officer was available for comment.
