Computer Literacy Day Signature campaign gets underway

By Pravin Mendis

The Computer Literacy Day campaign planned for February 4, organised by NIIT, a world leader in IT education was flagged off yesterday with the signature campaign that calls upon all Sri Lankans to enter the age of information and new technology armed with much needed computer skills.

Minister for Economic Reforms, Science and Technology, Milinda Moragoda and the Minister for Education, Cultural Affairs and Human Resource Development, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku endorsed the efforts of NIIT in expanding computer literacy in the country by placing their signatures for this campaign.

The NIIT hopes to obtain 50,000 signatures for the signature campaign in support for computer literacy in Sri Lanka through the NIIT education and training centres in Union Place, Nugegoda, Bambalapitiya, Kandy, Kurunegala and Gampaha.

Managing Director of MMBL Cyberskills the licensee of NIIT in Sri Lanka said the objective of the campaign is to create awareness among all Sri Lankans on the importance of computer literacy and make the country more productive and competitive in the global economy.

The Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the World Bank, Mohamed Muhsin said in a message that this campaign was a long overdue and endorsed the efforts and the leadership the private sector is providing. "This will augment Sri Lanka's leading overall literacy indicators, one of the highest in the region. Part of the success of future generations will be their ability to access knowledge of the success of various languages and be part of the networked world," he said.

The Sri Lanka Computer Literacy Day logo was unveiled by the Zonal Manager of NIIT, India, S.Venkatesh. He expressed confidence that the Indian experience of taking computer education and awareness to the masses could be effectively used in Sri Lanka to fast track the developments in this sector.

Mr.Venkatesh said it was a pioneering effort of two corporate entities in NIIT and MMBL CyberSkills in introducing and shouldering the responsibility of taking IT education to the peripheries.
