Death of a Trinity sportsman by Sharm de Alwis Gamini Ranaraja was a long distance runner but he could not go beyond the life span of fifty eight allotted to him by the Maker. Gamini won his Trinity athletics Colours in '59, the Lion in '60 in which year he captained the Trinity athletics team. In his year of captaincy Gamini won the half-mile at the Central Province Schools Meet and at the Public Schools Meet. Gamini also won the Duncan White Challenge Cup and the de Soysa Challenge Cup in the year of his glory. As a schoolboy, he was placed third in the half-mile at the National Championships in '60. Gamini played rugby for Trinity under the captaincy of Eric Roles and some of his team mates in the sports he participated in were Nimal Cooke Nahil Wijesuriya, D. C. Yatawara, Jayantha Jayawardena, Nissanka Pilimatalauwe, M. S. Zacky, Anil Siriwardena, Jayantissa Ratwatte, Nihal Halangoda, Noel Broheir, C. H. Seneviratne, Tony Buultjens and Dhammika Alawattegama. |
