SPC's New Chief Minister Opposition Leader

Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhana of the PA who was elected to represent the Southern Provincial Council at the 1999 provincial council with 58,516 preferential votes was appointed Chief Minister. Justin Galappaththi of the UNP was also elected to the Southern Provincial Council with 36,565 preferential votes at the same election became the Leader of the Opposition.

At the December General Election both the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition were elected to Parliament receiving 64,756 and 60,548 preferential votes respectively.

At the 2,000 General Election Mahinda Yapa Abeywardhana received 70,091 preferential votes to become a Parliamentarian, yet he opted to continue as Chief Minister. Justin Galappaththi who received 51,140 preferential votes at the same election could not become a Parliamentarian.
