News in brief Dengue preventive measures Several suspected cases of dengue case reported to have been detected at Dambulla, Galewela and Nalanda hospital. The Department of Virology Matale says that the dengue epidemic seems to have escaped detection causing havoc in several areas in Matale. When this reporter queried about two cases of dengue reported to have been treated, a medical officer of the Virology Unit said Dambulla is virtually a malaria area where some of its peripheral areas had shown resistance to drugs. In such an atmosphere people have to be very cautious. Dambulla town is a commercial centre mainly for vegetables. It seems to be the polluted unit of this area. The Town Council alone cannot do the cleaning of the town unless the vegetable mudalalies too lend their hand in this work. D.M.O. Dambula and the M.O.H. Dambulla said that they were quite alert to the situation and were taking preventive measures to combat the menace. Three wheeler driver abducts woman She was abducted by a three wheeler driver who attempted to seduce her, a woman police sergeant told the Warakapola Police where she works, a few days ago. The incidents had taken place at Nelundeniya while she was on her way to the police station. The driver and his vehicle were taken into custody the same evening at Morawaka in the Dedigama police area by the Warakapola Police who later transferred both to the Dedigama Police within which district the offense is alleged to have been committed. UNP supporter abducted G. H. A. Ariyadasa reputed to be a strong supporter of the UNP was abducted near his home at Dekinda on the eve of the December General Elections and has not been seen since. Police have so far only been able to recover a collection of clothes identified as belonging to the victim in a thicket. The 33-year-old father of two was seen being dragged into a double cab as he was walking on the road close to his home. Witnesses claim that the vehicle belonged to the Nawalapitiya Urban Council. The Nawalapitiya Police are continuing with their investigations. Buddhist monk attacked A Buddhist monk has been attacked by a gang of UNP supporters in Pannala, says a press release issued by People's Alliance Media and Publicity Unit. The release issued by PA Spokesman and Matara District MP Mangala Samaraweera requests the UNP leadership to take stern action to stop violence that has been unleashed by UNP supporters.
