Health Ministry warns of Dengue epidemic

With several cases of Dengue Fever (DF) and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) reported from Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Matara, Hambantota, Kurunegala districts, the Health Ministry warned yesterday that the disease would assume epidemic proportions.

The Ministry has issued necessary instructions to the provincial health authorities to intensify Dengue prevention and control activities, a Health Ministry news release said.

The main focus of prevention is to have community based integrated vector activities. The only method of prevention and control of DF/DHF is the removal and disposal of mosquito breeding containers from the environment. The dengue spreading mosquitoes bite during the daytime especially in the morning from 6.00 to 9.00 am. and in the evening from 3.00 to 6.00 pm, the release said.

Early medical advice and treatment should be sought from the nearest medical institution, if dengue fever is suspected.
