Indian safety, fire exhibition - an array of innovative devices by Upali Rupasinghe in New Delhi The International Security, Safety and Fire Exhibition which ended a few days ago in New Delhi displayed devices mainly used in combating the terrorist menace and also devices used in fire fighting and for deep sea diving. The exhibition was inaugurated by Union Home Minister, Lal Krishna Advani. Displayed in many stalls was the "Close Circuit Television Cameras" which are now very commonly used at vital installations and in public places like railway stations, airports, government buildings etc. The speciality of these high-tech cameras is that they are able to capture the image even from a distance. These cameras come in all sizes - be in size which is visible to the naked eye or in hidden, known as pen cameras. The monitoring screen on which their image is displayed has the capacity of displaying sixteen different images at a time. These cameras have been very successful in monitoring terrorist movements at many important installations. Also displayed at the exhibition was a vital computerised device known as the "Digital Voice Loger" used in recording and tracing telephonic calls. This device has been of great help in police headquarters and in stock exchanges. Apart from these there were mine sweepers and metal detectors. Some of the mine sweepers are tuned to detect bombs and mines up to 8-10 feet below the ground. There were also special bomb detection devices on display which detect bombs planted below a car. A special bomb detection suit has also on show which can save the lives of many police and security personnel which detecting bombs. A 'Portable Robot' which can defuse and dispose off bombs and will be a boon for security personnel who risk getting hurt or wounded when defusing a bomb was another big draw. Apart from these items on display were bullet-proof jackets which can be assembled or disassembled in 30 seconds. Search lights also adorned the stalls of the security and fire safety exhibition. These search lights have the capacity of beaming its rays for a distance of around 1,000 metres. There were also special suits which can protect a person from chemical weapons and a "Cash Bag Alarm" which can give an electric shock to bag snatchers. A special device which can detect fake currencies was also on display. An array of fire fighting devices were also displayed at the exhibition such as special fire suits, blankets etc. |
