Faculty of Graduate Studies third research sessions

The third research sessions of the Graduate Studies at the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura will be held on December 21 at the Forestry Auditorium of the University. The Vice Chancellor Prof. J. W. Wickramasinghe will chair the inaugural session. The keynote address will be delivered by the chief guest, General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Janaka Ratnesiri.

This year the theme seminar chaired by Prof. M. M. Karunanayake, Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies will focus on the theme "Whither University Research: Pure or Applied?". Six eminent panellists will address the theme from the perspective of the Humanities (Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam), Life Sciences (Prof. S. Kotagama), Management and Commerce (Sunil Gunatunge), Medical Sciences (Prof. Devaka Fernando), Physical Sciences (Prof. S. Weerakoon) and the panellists are expected to lead a lively debate and discussion moderated by the Chairman.

The sessions will also have four technical meetings devoted to Humanities, Life sciences and Medical Sciences, Management and Commerce and Social Sciences. The chairman of technical sessions will be Prof. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera (Humanities). Dr. Nandani Ediriweera (Life Sciences and Medical Sciences), Dr. David Evans (Management and Commerce) and Prof. S. B. Hettiarachchi (Social Science). Altogether 34 research papers will be presented at the technical sessions.

The research sessions of the Faculty of Graduate Studies have now become a regular event (organized either annually or biennially) at the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura. The basic objective is to foster, strengthen and sustain a research tradition at the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura by creating space within its system for intellectual interaction, discussion and debate to advance the frontiers of knowledge.
