Ensure food supplies to the people: JVP

JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa in a press release issued yesterday points out that even after a fortnight since the UNF came to power, election related violence has continued unabated and the supporters of the JVP have fallen victims to the mafia-styled politics practised by the UNP and the PA.

Weerawansa also states that the UNP which promised to reduce the unprecedented cost of living is making sinister attempts to increase the prices of goods let alone providing substantial food stocks to the people.

As an example he mentions that the price of a kilo of B onions has been hiked by 16 rupees, while the government also has conveniently allowed the price of a kilo of flour to shoot up by 5 rupees.

These prices of essential food items have been increased particularly at a time when the majority of the population was struggling to eke out even a day to day living which in other words have driven the people from the frying pan to the fire.

The JVP Propaganda Secretary says that even during the course of the JVP-PA MoU during the last Parliament, one of the main conditions laid down by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was that the government should not hike the prices of all essential food items and all measures should be taken no matter what the consequences are to provide ample food stocks at their existing prices.

Wimal Weerawansa explains that the main grouse of the new government is that they have been unable to provide swift economic solutions as the PA has left the state coffers empty.

The JVP Publicity Secretary calls on the UNP leadership to make a genuine effort to fill the Treasury by such acts as recovering billions of rupees defaulted to the state banks by big time businessmen of the UNP and PA if the government is truly desirous of placing the country on a solid economic footing.

The JVP also urges the government that even if they are unable to swiftly reduce the existing prices of all the essential food items, all necessary measures should be taken to provide an uninterrupted supply of food stocks to the public at all times.
