Ransilu creates a new Sri Lanka record

by our Kandy sports correspondent

Fifteen year old Grade ten student from Kingswood College, Ransilu Jayatillake created a new Sri Lankan record at power lifting at the First Junior National Power Lifting Championship 2001 organised by the Sri Lanka Power Lifting Federation and held at the University Gymnasium, Peradeniya.

Ransilu Jayatillake competing in the 110 body weight category (under 18 years) recorded 225.5 kilogrammes in the squat which is a new Sri Lankan mark and he had 90 kg. in Bench Press and followed it up with 210 kgs. in the Dead Lift to aggregate 525.5 kgs which is a fine achievement by this youngster who has put up some significant displays in weight lifting and athletics as well. His lift of 210 kgs in weight lifting is the highest ever by a junior Sri Lankan lifter.

This being the first ever junior national power lifting champions all winners of the respective categories will hold the records.

This was also the first time that a power lifting meet had been held in the hill capital and taking this sport to the provinces will augur well for the future of the sport.
