Wesleyite Boteju in rugger pool

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Wesley College ruggerite Lahiru Boteju has been included in the new 25-member Sri Lanka pool named last night for next month's Kings Cup International Sevens tournament in Thailand.

Of the Sri Lanka Under-19 pool now training for next month's Youth Asiad in Japan, second row forward Boteju is the only player to find a place in the new national seven-a-side pool.

Havelock Sports Club's speedy three quarter Sanjeewa Jayasinghe is tipped to retain the captaincy of the Sri Lanka team for the Kings Cup Sevens. Under Jayasinghe's leadership, Sri Lanka made it to the semi-finals of the Singer Sri Lankan Sevens in Kandy (Cup championship) and Dubai International Sevens in Dubai (Bowl championships).

The other players are in the Sri Lanka national seven-a-side pool are Sanjeewa Jayasinghe R.Ruwantillake, Radhika Hettiarachchi, Sajith Mallikarachchi, Ravi Jayasuriya, Milinda Jayasinghe, Nalaka Weerakkody, Savantha de Saram, Indrajith Bandaranayake, M.C.Fernando, N.Jayasuriya, Vajira Jayatillake, Prasad Batepola, B.D.N.Fernando, Rangika Ranasinghe, Thusal Jayawardena, Lalindra Rodrigo, Dilan Abeygoonawardena, H.Wijeweera, Rajiv Ganapathy, and Kirhsan Musafar, Asela Jayasinghe, Dinuk Wijeratne, Zulfikar Hamid.

Veteran national player Sudath Sampath has been dropped from the Sri Lanka national seven's pool after a dismal performance at the Dubai International Sevens in Dubai last weekend and it looks like it will be the end of road for the veteran national player.

Sampath was preferred ahead of promising Milinda Jayasinghe for the Dubai International Sevens. But Sampath, who solely got into the side on experience, filed to justify the selection committee decision to have him in the team to Dubai. Meanwhile, Jayasinghe is now set to find a place in the final tour squad for the Kings Cup International Sevens, scheduled for early next month.

Sri Lanka is due to compete at the Kings Cup International Sevens in Thailand on December 7 and 8. But the real test for the team will come in Hong Kong next March when they scrum down with some of the top teams in the world at the Hong Kong International Sevens.
