He further said what the people need today is a new system of politics capable of fulfilling people's aspirations that have not been fulfilled by alternative political parties during the past fifty years. He said that the present system of election entailing heavy expenditure exposes the successful candidates to corruption in order to recuperate themselves from the financial losses sustained in the course of election campaigns. He highlighted the escalating phenomenon of terrorism as the major challenge which has to be handled only through warm and soft negotiation under the existing norms of intellectual, technological and human values that supersede property values. He pointed out that the leaders like Premadasa and Chandrika have traversed this path to some extent and urged the people to give Ranil Wickremesinghe a chance to achieve an acceptable and lasting solution to this problem. Messrs. Mohammed Maharoof, Stanley Christopher, Sampath Rambukkanage and Ranjith Fernando also spoke. |
