JVP program to make politics a people-oriented venture

JVP General Secretary Tylvin Silva said that the 'Nation Building Program put forward to the country by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is not an election manifesto but a constructive short-term policy to make politics a people-oriented venture instead of the culture of power and wealth practised hitherto by the UNP and the PA.

Tylvin Silva made this comment at the official launch of the JVP's Nation Building Program which took place amidst a distinguished gathering of religious leaders, academics, professionals, and artistes at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Tuesday morning.

He said the JVP's short-term program was drawn primarily to save the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty from falling into the grasp of the separatist movement at the behest of a certain so-called major political party. Secondly the JVP's Nation Building Program had drawn the attention of the electorate on ways and means of reviving the badly floundering economy which had been stalled from progressing due to the bad management of the UNP and the PA during their past 24-year governance.

Thirdly the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has endeavoured to usher in a fresh political culture whereby they strive to make politics a people oriented venture than a power and wealth amassing practice.

Tylvin Silva during his introductory speech also explained the pains taken by the JVP political committee in drawing up the short-term Nation Building Program and said it is a further enhancement of the proposals underlined in their year 2000 election manifesto which was then titled "Rata Hadana Pas Avurudu Salesma'. The JVP General Secretary pointed out that it was the long-term ambition of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna to govern this country through a clear and strong mandate whilst depriving the opportunity for the UNP and the PA to dilly-dally with the nation's most vexed problems in the future.

JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa speaking on the occasion appreciated the suggestions and support rendered towards the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna by reputed academics, artistes, and professionals encompassing a wide array of fields in drawing up their election manifesto.

Weerawansa noted that if not for their invaluable contributions they would not have been able to introduce their Nation Building Program in such a short space of time.

President of the Sri Lanka Green Party and Environmentalist Piyal Parakrama airing his views on the occasion said the JVP's policy program had shown concern and policies to further protect the natural resources of the country instead of selling it off to foreign powers for a cheap stipend.

Parakrama acknowledged the stand taken by the JVP to further improve the Land, Irrigation and power sectors.

Veteran vocalist Gunadasa Kapuge speaking at the launching ceremony promised the support of all artistes be they actors, actresses, vocalists, dramatists, or musicians to resuscitate the fledgling arts and culture fields.

Renowned author Parakrama Kodithuwakku said the JVP was the only party which had put forward a clear set of programs to halt the fast deterioration of the country's rich resources and other long cherished values. He urged the JVP to build up a vibrant dialogue in the length and breath of the country throughout their election campaign trail as that would pave the way for them to muster sufficient votes to march forward with their Nation Building Program.

Veteran Film-Maker K. A. W. Perera, Veteran Musician Premasiri Khemadasa, Popular Dramatist and lyricist Lucien Bulathsinhala, Professor Mendis Rohanadeera, Professor Siripala Hettige, Vocalist Lakshman Wijesekera and Actor Roger Senevirathne were also among a galaxy of prominent individuals who graced the ceremony.

Former JVP MPs Anura Dissanayake, Bimal Ratnayake, Sunil Handunetti, Lal Kantha of the Samajavadi Govi Sangamaya were also present on the occasion.
