Sihala Urumaya and Muslim Congress advocate communalism

by Mahinda Liyanage,

Sihala Urumaya and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress are both advocating communalism and extremism in this country, said Galle district PA candidate Asami Hamad. Addressing a meeting in Galle he further said:

The Muslim Congress does not symbolise the aspirations of the entire Muslim community of the country. It is merely a chauvanist party. The majority of the country irrespective of their ethnicity reject communal politics. If the Sinhala community being the largest nation of the country patronage of advocate the communalism, the Sihala Urumaya would have been elected to power easily. In the same way the Sinhalese renounce the chauvinism of the Sihala Urumaya the Muslims also dismiss the communal politics of the Muslim Congress.

The selection of the UNP's Muslim candidate for the Galle electorate at the December 5 polls despises the dignity of the Muslim community of Galle. The UNP has selected a non-resident represent the Muslims of the electorate, Hamad pointed out.

The UNP's Muslim candidate for Galle is a member of the Muslim Congress which advocates communal politics. The Muslims in Galle since time immemorial have lived in harmony with the Sinhala community. By nominating a candidate of a chauvanist party to Galle the UNP has caused a great damage to the Sinhala-Muslim unity of Galle, he remarked.

"I joined the SLFP in 1968. Since then I have done the needed sacrifices and shouldered many responsibilities on behalf of the party. I won't leave the party unto my death.

"But in contrary Mr. Lionel Premasiri, the former Mayor who joined the party at a later stage than us in 1991, after rising to several higher positions in the field of politics, after enjoying numerous privileges and facilities owing to the blessings of the party quit it for personal gains betraying both the party and the people. In the near future people of Galle will teach him a good lesson for his betrayal.

After 40 years the people of Galle electorate could elect an MP of their own at the previous election. At the said election too the former Mayor unleashed all entraps to prevent the election of Mr. Mawellage as the MP for Galle. But he failed to stop the success of both Mr. Mawellage and the people of Galle.

Within the past Mr. Keerthi Mawellage as the MP for Galle could get a sum of Rs. 470 million for the development projects in Galle from the government. That was the last year's largest allocation of funds for an electorate. All these benefits could be gained as the people of Galle could elect a Member of Parliament of their own. Notwithstanding the fact that some traitors quit the party, all progressive people remained in the party. It is certain that Mr. Keerthi Suranjith Mawellage would be able to unite all such progressive forces and usher in a supreme victory for the PA at the forthcoming election in the Galle electorate.
